Hi Alun,

As long as you don't leave too long between coats then you shouldn't usually have to do any sanding down.

Hope that helps!

I plan to follow your advice with my new untreated redwood garden (side) gates, using Sikkens Cetol HLS Plus as a base coat, followed by Sikkens Cetol Filter 7 Plus as the top coats.

However, I have been unable to find out if one should rub down the doors (sandpaper) between coats.

The Sikkens Technical data sheets and FAQ don't specify.

Can you please advise?

Many thanks,

Hi Laura,

It doesn't ring any bells with us, it could be a term unique to where you are located (are you in the UK?)?

If you've got any more information then let me know and I'll do my best to help.

Hi, Just a quick question about old fashioned carpentry terminology. While looking up some ancestry information, I found an entry for my grandfather from 1905 that refers to his occupation as a "mounter". Since we live where there were railroads, timber yards, canning factories and founderies, my assumption was that this had to do with carpentry - via timber yards. Do you think this is related to woodworking of any kind?

Thanks,

Laura

99 times out of a 100 you will find yourself having to ease the underside of the door, more than likely this is because whoever has hung the door has not sealed the bare timber underneath (why bother, you can't see it - nobody will know!).

If you do ease the underside of the door or are hanging door then get a coat of paint or stain on the edge underneath - this will help to stop water getting in which in turn will reduce the likelihood of the door swelling!

Thanks for the guest post UK Oakdoors!
