Read Our Story

meet jon!

Meet the owner of Gate Expectations, Jon Culshaw. He’s the third generation of craftsmen in his family – all of whom were skilled carpenters and joiners – so you could definitely say it’s in his blood!

His story began with William Joseph Culshaw – Jon’s grandfather – who was an apprentice carpenter and joiner during the 1930s. He made coffins for the war effort, and after the war he began making cots, highchairs and toys.

Next in line came William’s son, Bill “Gates” Culshaw, who followed in his father’s footsteps, training as a carpentry and joinery apprentice. He worked for other firms before finally founding his own carpentry and joinery business in the late eighties.

Bill ran Gate Expectations for many successful years before sadly passing away in 2015. His son Jon – who is also a qualified carpenter and joiner – then took over the reins of the family business. Even today, he still builds our garage doors using some of his grandfather’s original tools.

We use five timbers in total, with both softwood and hardwood options available for all of our doors.

In softwood we have the Unsorted Scandinavian Redwood, which is the best grade of softwood available. We also supply Accoya which is a modified softwood – this is the longest lasting, commercially available timber. Both softwoods can be painted or stained – please contact us if you want to stain the Accoya as the wood will require extra perparation.

For the Hardwood options we have Meranti, Idigbo and Prime European Oak. All can be stained, but only the Meranti can be painted.

From the outside, they look the same as all of our standard garage doors; however, from the inside, rather than seeing the back of the boarding and horizontal rails, you see a similar view as you would when looking at the front of the doors because they are boarded on both sides. This enables us to ‘sandwich in’ insulation between the two layers of boarding.

It also means they’re slightly thicker than our standard doors as they are 65mm thick, rather than 45mm.

We don’t supply the glazing for the windows – the garage doors come with the openings ready to fit the windows and pre-beaded too (the majority of manufacturers do not supply the glazing beads).

Everything that we manufacture is handmade to measure, so prices vary based on your requirements. Prices start from £595 for the Clywd garage doors – this is for the smallest sized door, in softwood, and the doors only.

There are plenty of options available to customise your doors to your exact requirements, so to find the right price for you just click on any one of the doors in our online shop above to visit the product pages, enter your sizes and select your options (the price will adapt accordingly).

Our garage doors are made to measure by our time served joiners, all of whom are skilled carpenters.

We’re based in the seaside town of Rhyl in North Wales, and all of our garage doors are made in our workshop here.

We are manufacturing joiners, so we do not fit the garage doors ourselves. In many parts of the UK we have a network of joiners that we’re able to recommend to you, based on those that have been recommended by our previous customers. We are able to provide a measuring up service to any customers who are local to ourselves (North Wales coast, Chester, Wrexham, Wirral for example).

To add windows to our garage doors, you can source your own glazier locally and choose your own glass from their range, giving you the flexibility to design them how you’d like. We’ll provide you with the sizes to make sure they’re the perfect fit. Your chosen glazier would then supply and fit the windows for you, or the joiner who fits the doors could fit the glass too. It’s better to glaze the doors once fitted.
