Read Our Story

meet jon!

Meet the owner of Gate Expectations, Jon Culshaw. He’s the third generation of craftsmen in his family – all of whom were skilled carpenters and joiners – so you could definitely say it’s in his blood!

His story began with William Joseph Culshaw – Jon’s grandfather – who was an apprentice carpenter and joiner during the 1930s. He made coffins for the war effort, and after the war he began making cots, highchairs and toys.

Next in line came William’s son, Bill “Gates” Culshaw, who followed in his father’s footsteps, training as a carpentry and joinery apprentice. He worked for other firms before finally founding his own carpentry and joinery business in the late eighties.

Bill ran Gate Expectations for many successful years before sadly passing away in 2015. His son Jon – who is also a qualified carpenter and joiner – then took over the reins of the family business. Even today, he still builds our wooden gates using some of his grandfather’s original tools.

"I tried for a long time to find a gate supplier that would provide both a good looking gate and one that would actually fit the space I had. These guys did a great job - custom made and fits a treat. Very happy with the results. It was as good as I hoped it would be from the pictures. Now I can keep my Westie in the garden!"

We use five timbers in total, with both softwood and hardwood options available for all of our gates.

In softwood we have the Unsorted Scandinavian Redwood, which is the best grade of softwood available. We also supply Accoya which is a modified softwood – this is the longest lasting, commercially available timber. Both softwoods can be painted or stained – please contact us if you want to stain the Accoya as the wood will require extra perparation.

For the Hardwood options we have Meranti, Idigbo and Prime European Oak. All can be stained, but only the Meranti can be painted.

Here’s a quick summary of each of our gate ranges –

Driveway – These gates protect the entrance to your driveway and are generally made of two doors that close together in the middle (although this can be off centre or one door only).

Pedestrian – These gates are a taller style of outdoor gate (up to around 2100mm high) and are generally used as side passage gates.

Garden – This style of gate is similar to the pedestrian but smaller in height and you would have it in front of your house between the pavement and your garden.

Five Bar – A five bar gate is a wide gate with five horizontal bars and usually one or two diagonal bars that cross from corner to corner. They are often used for driveways, field entrances, and other purposes such as boundary access and regulating access to farm fields.

Bespoke – Although we have a range of wooden gate styles and designs that are available made to measure, you may well have something more specific in mind, in which case we can manufacture a gate based on your design or idea.

Everything that we manufacture is handmade to measure, so prices vary based on your requirements. Prices start from £595 for the Clywd garage doors – this is for the smallest sized door, in softwood, and the doors only.

There are plenty of options available to customise your gates to your exact requirements, so to find the right price for you just click on any one of the doors in our online shop above to visit the product pages, enter your sizes and select your options (the price will adapt accordingly).

Our wooden gates are made to measure by our time served joiners, all of whom are skilled carpenters.

We’re based in the seaside town of Rhyl in North Wales, and all of our wooden gates are made in our workshop here.

We are manufacturing joiners, so we do not fit the wooden gates ourselves. In many parts of the UK we have a network of joiners that we’re able to recommend to you, based on those that have been recommended by our previous customers. We are able to provide a measuring up service to any customers who are local to ourselves (North Wales coast, Chester, Wrexham, Wirral for example).

The gate itself is of course included, manufactured to your bespoke dimensions. The cost of delivery is also included (additional charges may apply for delivery off the mainland). Any ironmongery – hinges, latches, handles etc – is not included in the gate order but can be added on as an optional extra if needed.
