Which ironmongery finish?

Marine grade stainless steel -

Unlike coated steel, the corrosion resistance comes from the stainless steel itself, so there is no coating to chip, peel or wear away. One of the most durable options for outdoor ironmongery.

Ideal for coastal environments and for use on acidic timbers such as Accoya, Oak, Western Red Cedar & Iroko.

Appearance silvery-grey in colour.

Black on galvanised -

This finish combines two protection systems into one: the steel hinge is first hot-dip galvanised, then a black polyester or epoxy powder coat is baked over the zinc layer. One coating fights corrosion chemically, the other shields it physically.

The idea is simple. Galvanising handles the long battle with weather, while the powder coat provides appearance and extra shielding.

Galvanised -

Hot spelter galvanising, often shortened to hot-dip galvanised or simply HDG, is one of the oldest and most trusted protective finishes used on steel ironmongery. Instead of sitting on the surface like paint or lacquer, it becomes part of the metal itself.

Appearance wise a silvery grey colour and can be quite a rustic looking finish.

Black powder coated -

An epoxy black finish is created by applying an electrostatically charged dry powder to bare self-colour steel and then baking it in an oven. The heat melts the powder into a continuous skin that wraps the metal in a uniform protective layer.

Unlike the "black on galv" finish, if the coating becomes scratched then the bare metal can rust.

Bright Zinc Plated -

Bright zinc plating, often called BZP or electro-galvanising (E-Galv), is created by passing an electrical current through a chemical bath that deposits a very thin layer of zinc onto steel. Unlike hot-dip galvanising, no molten metal and no alloy layers are involved. The coating is precise, controlled and smooth.

Appearance wise it's a shiny silvery-grey.

Self Colour -

Self colour steel is exactly what leaves the mill or the fabricator. No plating, no paint, no galvanising. Just bare carbon steel with its natural mill scale and workshop character intact. Usually used for fabrication (i.e. welding) where the finished item will be sprayed or painted upon completion.

Bottom Field Gate Hinges

A traditional heavy duty double strap bottom hinge for timber field gates, five bar gates and driveway gates.

Also commonly known as a wraparound hinge, the gate stile sits between the two straps of the hinge. This means the hinge wraps around both sides of the timber and is visible from both the front and rear of the gate, giving a strong and secure fixing.

These bottom hinges are normally used together with one of our longer field gate top hinges, which are available in 12″ / 300mm, 18″ / 450mm and 24″ / 600mm lengths.

Why is the bottom hinge shorter?

The bottom hinge is normally shorter than the top hinge because it only needs to fit around the vertical stile of the gate.

The top hinge is longer because it passes over the stile and along the full thickness of the top rail or head of the gate. This helps spread the load from the weight of the gate over a greater area. You can find our field gate top hinges here

Which size do I need?

We stock three versions:

3 1/2″ / 88mm for 3″ / 75mm thick gates, available in black or galvanised finish.

5″ / 125mm for 3″ / 75mm thick gates, available in black or galvanised finish.

3 1/2″ / 88mm for 2″ / 50mm thick gates – Designed specifically for gates manufactured from 2″ / 50mm thick timber and available in galvanised finish only.

It is worth checking the actual thickness of your gate before ordering, as traditional field gates are commonly made from 3″ / 75mm timber, while some lighter or smaller gates are made from 2″ / 50mm material.

19mm hinge pin

All of the hinges in this range are designed to fit a standard 19mm field gate hinge pin.

How are they fixed?

Each hinge is normally secured to the gate with one coach bolt passing right through the gate stile, together with two screws, one fitted from each side of the gate.

Fixings are not supplied.

Supplied individually

These hinges are supplied individually. If you require a pair, you will need to order two hinges.

Can they allow a gate to swing both ways?

When the hinge pins are positioned appropriately between the gate posts and sufficient clearance is allowed, this type of hinge can be used where the gate needs to swing open in either direction.

Automated gates

These shorter field gate hinges are also sometimes used as top hinges on pairs of automated timber gates where a traditional long top band is not required.

Black or galvanised?

The versions for 3″ / 75mm thick gates are available in either black or galvanised finish.

Black gives a more traditional appearance and works well where the rest of the gate furniture is also black.

Galvanised is a practical choice for outdoor use and gives the steel increased protection against corrosion.

The version for 2″ / 50mm thick gates is manufactured in galvanised finish only.
