Free timber for schools update

We’ve created a bit of a stir

Since we offered local schools free timber for their woodworking departments we’ve created a bit of a stir, so thought I’d share a few of the comments we’ve been getting with you!

Free wood for schools on the TV?!

After the initial interest in the timber took us by surprise, I did say we would try our best to help every school who has been in touch with us.
At present, it’s proving far trickier than I thought! I’ve been in touch with various joinery companies some who are interested in helping but not at the moment (watch this space!). So, we got our thinking hats on and rang up ITV Wales.
Amazingly enough, they decided to come up and film both at our workshops and at Denbigh High School.

ITV Wales filming at our workshops

ITV Wales’ Ian Lang interviewing Bill!
You can find Ian on twitter here!

You can see the results of ITV Wales’ filming and interviews over on the ITV website here.
A few people have emailed in suggesting we get in touch with the Welsh Assembly Government and the local authorities as they may be interested – we have done and they are not, you can read more here.
British Woodworking Federation have joined us in calling for others to get involved – Read what they have to say at Free timber for schools, get involved
Timber Trades Journal also back the idea, you can read what they say at Take-off for schools
TRADA (Timber Research and Development Association) have also helped our appeal for other woodworkers to come forward – you can read what they say here.
And finally Glwyndwr Uni gave us a mention after we supplied them with some timber and they even got us a bit of local press (Daily Post & Flintshire Leader) as well – read what Glyndwr Uni say.

Help us to help you

If you’re a Woodwork teacher then help us to help you, please do send us any comments regarding lack of timber in schools and I promise to make sure the BWF sees them – you can get in touch with us using the form here.

We’ve inspired Steve at SBT Design to have a clear out!

Alison Gow, North Wales Daily Post Editor thinks it’s a nice idea!

Wow I made that

The ‘Wow I made that’ community on Facebook are backing it, this is actually a BWF (British Woodworking Federation) campaign to provide information, advice and guidance to young people interested in a woodworking career in joinery. Find out more here Wow I made that
BWF supporting our idea

British Woodworking Federation

Micheal Lee (Membership director at the BWF) tells us he is in discussions with his colleagues at the BWF as to how they may be able to run this excellent initiative to other areas of the country!

Business Supporting Communities

Lucy Kew a project officer over at Business Supporting Communities has give us a mention in the news section or their website as well as featuring us on their Business Supporting Communities (B2C) Project’s ‘10 ideas to inspire’ list (coming soon I’m told). You can find out what they have written about our scrap timber idea here. Well worth a read of their website in general as they are doing great things across North Wales and there may well be a way you could get involved too!
I’ll keep this page updated regularly, so please watch this space as they say and if you’re a woodworker nearby to us who would like to get involved, then please get in touch using the sign up form over here. If you’re a school and you’ve not yet been in touch with us, then please do!
