Marine grade stainless steel -
Unlike coated steel, the corrosion resistance comes from the stainless steel itself, so there is no coating to chip, peel or wear away. One of the most durable options for outdoor ironmongery.
Ideal for coastal environments and for use on acidic timbers such as Accoya, Oak, Western Red Cedar & Iroko.
Appearance silvery-grey in colour.
Black on galvanised -
This finish combines two protection systems into one: the steel hinge is first hot-dip galvanised, then a black polyester or epoxy powder coat is baked over the zinc layer. One coating fights corrosion chemically, the other shields it physically.
The idea is simple. Galvanising handles the long battle with weather, while the powder coat provides appearance and extra shielding.
Galvanised -
Hot spelter galvanising, often shortened to hot-dip galvanised or simply HDG, is one of the oldest and most trusted protective finishes used on steel ironmongery. Instead of sitting on the surface like paint or lacquer, it becomes part of the metal itself.
Appearance wise a silvery grey colour and can be quite a rustic looking finish.
Black powder coated -
An epoxy black finish is created by applying an electrostatically charged dry powder to bare self-colour steel and then baking it in an oven. The heat melts the powder into a continuous skin that wraps the metal in a uniform protective layer.
Unlike the "black on galv" finish, if the coating becomes scratched then the bare metal can rust.
Bright Zinc Plated -
Bright zinc plating, often called BZP or electro-galvanising (E-Galv), is created by passing an electrical current through a chemical bath that deposits a very thin layer of zinc onto steel. Unlike hot-dip galvanising, no molten metal and no alloy layers are involved. The coating is precise, controlled and smooth.
Appearance wise it's a shiny silvery-grey.
Self Colour -
Self colour steel is exactly what leaves the mill or the fabricator. No plating, no paint, no galvanising. Just bare carbon steel with its natural mill scale and workshop character intact. Usually used for fabrication (i.e. welding) where the finished item will be sprayed or painted upon completion.
