Throw Over Gate Loops

A simple and traditional way of holding timber field gates, five bar gates and driveway gates securely in the closed position.

The throw over loop is normally fitted to the top rail of one gate and pivots over the adjoining gate when used on a pair, or over the gate post when used with a single gate.

They are particularly popular on field and estate style gates because there is very little to go wrong. Lift the loop, open the gate, then drop it back over when the gate is closed.

The loop is secured through the top rail of the gate with a coach bolt, giving a strong and straightforward fixing.

Which type of throw over loop do I need?

We stock three main styles.

Standard throw over gate loop

The traditional version, ideal where you simply need to hold a pair of gates together or a single gate against a post.

For 3″ / 75mm thick gates these are available in:

• 6″ / 150mm
• 14″ / 355mm
• 18″ / 450mm

Available in black or galvanised finishes.

Throw over gate loop with lifting handle

The lifting handle makes the loop easier to raise and lower, particularly with the longer and heavier versions.

It is also useful on equestrian gates where the gate may sometimes be operated from horseback.

Available for 3″ / 75mm thick gates in:

• 14″ / 355mm
• 18″ / 450mm

Available in black or galvanised finishes.

Lockable throw over gate loop

The lockable version gives you the same simple throw over operation but allows the gate to be secured with a padlock when required.

This is useful on driveway, field and access gates where you occasionally need more security than a standard throw over loop provides.

Available as:

• 18″ / 450mm
• To suit 3″ / 75mm thick gates
• Galvanised finish only

Throw over loop for 2″ / 50mm gates

We also stock a narrower version designed specifically for gates manufactured from 2″ / 50mm thick timber.

This is available as:

• 12″ / 300mm
• Black or galvanised finish

This can be particularly useful for lighter timber gates where a standard loop designed for a 3″ / 75mm field gate would be too wide.

Single gates or pairs of gates?

On a pair of gates, the loop is fitted to one gate and simply drops over the top of the second gate to hold the two together.

On a single gate, the loop can be positioned so that it drops over the adjoining gate post instead.

Why use a throw over gate loop?

There is very little mechanism involved, which is part of their appeal. They are simple to fit, easy to operate and give a positive way of holding the gate closed.

Choosing the correct sized throw over gate loop

The gate thickness is important when choosing a throw over loop.

Most traditional timber field and five bar gates are around 3″ / 75mm thick, so the majority of the loops in this range are manufactured to suit that thickness.

If your gate is made from 2″ / 50mm timber, choose the dedicated 2″ version instead.

It is always worth measuring the actual thickness of your gate before ordering rather than relying solely on the type of gate.
