Bala Driveway Gates

With their distinctive ‘dropped head’, our ever popular Bala driveway gates are sure to bring many admiring glances and comments from passers by and neighbours!

Pictured in Scandinavian Redwood (which was stained by our customer).

Our Bala driveway gates are available made to measure in European Oak, Idigbo, Meranti (Hardwoods), Accoya (Modified Softwood) as well as the Softwood option shown.

As well as the traditional manually operated gates pictured, the Bala driveway pair, like all of our gates, can be made suitable for automation.

The Bala are also available as a double sided gate and an open boarded gate. Matching garden gates and pedestrian gates are also available.

Online sprices from 1000mm to 2100 in height & opening widths from 1600mm upto 4000mm. For any sizes outside these please contact us.

For gate width we require the overall combined (two gate) widths.

Accoya is priced as suitable for painting, if you intend to stain the timber then please contact us for a price enquiries@woodworkersuk.co.uk.

Prices online are for heights between 1000mm to 2100mm high (at highest point) & 1600mm wide to 4000mm wide, for any sizes outside these please contact us at
enquiries@woodworkersuk.co.uk for a personalised costing.
Joggles are the protrusions on top corners of the gates, these give the mortice & tenon joints strength. As standard the joggles are arched/curved.
Optional cover strip sits over the 10mm clearance gap between the two gates in the centre. Supplied loose for fixing once gates have been hung.
50/50 split is where both gates of the pair are the same size. Unequally split gives you one gate larger than the other so one gate can be used as a pedestrian access gate.
Maximum width of a single gate is 2000mm. Please state preferred width of gates for split. For example if total width is 3000mm, you can state 1000mm and 2000mm.
Which gate is the smaller gate when viewed from the front? Left or Right.
Open boarded or slatted gates are great if you live in a windy area, as they allow the wind to pass through the gates. Larger close boarded gates can be difficult, at times, to open into a strong wind; you run the risk of the wind dragging them out of your hands; with an open boarded gate, this can be greatly reduced.
Usually with a gate, the bracing and rails are exposed on the rear. Choose double boarded/double sided gates if you don't want to see the rails/bracing.
Not recommended however if you are intending to automate the gates.
standard bracing or double braced driveway gates
The rear of the gates has diagonal bracing, this should point down to the bottom rail and spreads the weight to the hinge side. In some instances or if you are automating the gates with an above ground system the you would double brace the gates so the bracing forms an 'X' on the rear of each gate. On shorter gates double bracing willappear as an upturned 'V'. If you require this or are using an above ground automation system please select double bracing.
add a full thickness bottom rail
As standard gates have bottom rail that can only be seen from rear, from the front it is covered by the cladding. Add a full thickness bottom rails means the bottom rail can be seen from both sides of the gates, bottom rail being 5 3/4" / 145mm tall with the cladding being jointed into the rail. Bottom rail is required if you intend to automate the gates with a below ground automation system.
