Description
Alyn Framed ledged and braced garage doors
The Alyn is a true framed ledged and braced door, if you look at the front and rear pics above you’ll notice that the boarding ends where it comes into contact with the bottom rail, and the bottom rail is at the very bottom of the door.
These days you’ll find a lot of people trying to pass off ‘framed, ledged and braced doors’ that do not have a full thickness bottom rail (they have a hidden or barefaced bottom rail which can only be seen from the rear of the door) as can be seen on the centre rail in the Alyn doors above – these are not true framed ledged and braced doors (FLB). If you’re looking for a door without a solid bottom rail then check out our Clwyd garage doors still based on a through, wedged morticed and tenon jointed frame!
If you do choose a true framed, ledged and braced door then the other thing to check is the proportions of the bottom rail in comparison to the top rail or head – the bottom rail is always bigger! As with the Alyn above, the bottom rail is 5 3/4″ / 145mm while the top rail is 3 3/4″ / 95mm. The Reason for this is tried and tested over the years, the door would not look right with a 3 3/4″ high bottom rail and if you decided to match the top rail with the dimensions of the bottom rails (145mm) then again the doors look out of proportion!
So why a solid bottom rail?
The solid bottom rail gives the doors additional strength that is especially needed on wider doors. It also provides the added benefit of protecting the more vulnerable end grain of the tongue and groove boards (end grain can be difficult to protect adequately with paints or stains as it gets absorbed rather quickly and doesn’t last as long!), with a solid bottom rail the boarding of the doors is approx 5 3/4 inches (145mm) high up from the ground meaning that the boards cannot soak up any lying water.
Customise our Alyn garage doors
As with all our garage doors, the Alyn is made to measure and can be customised further. You may want an unequally split pair of doors for example or stable style garage doors, for anything not listed then please contact us.

Garage Door Automation
We do not supply automation systems with our doors, for doors that are being automated you should source a trained gate automater as it is not a fit and forget install, it is also impossible to supply a gate automation system without the automater first doing a site survey.
Doors once automated are legally classed as a machine and need testing (and signing off as being safe) after install and every 12 months after.
For clearances on installs that are being automated, recommended door frame sizes and hinge/ironmongery requiremnts then your gate automater should advise as different systems have different specs and requirements.
All our doors can be manufactured to suit automation. If intending to automate then please contact us for more information
About Us
Three generations of time served craftsman…
We’re a small family run company, who come from a long line of carpenters and joiners, you could say it’s in our blood.
Based in Rhyl, on the beautiful North Wales coast we produce made to measure wooden gates, side hung wooden garage doors and general joinery items. We began making our own range of gates and garage doors back in 1989, but our business is based on decades of carpentry and joinery expertise that stretches back over three generations. Our work today is still based on the teaching, techniques and craftsmanship of our forefathers.
Measuring Up
All you need to supply us with at this stage to get a price/proceed with an order is the structural opening height & width.
If you just have a brickwork opening with no frame in place then just measure the opening width (in three places – top, middle & bottom) and use the smallest measurement. Posts can be added as you travel through the steps to order your gates. Keep a note on all three measurements.
You have a frame in place – again measure the opening width in three places (top, middle & bottom) and use the smallest measurement. Again keep a note of all three measurements however.
Oak framed garages – In most cases you do not need a door frame, however be aware that a frame may be need if you have a brick skirting/plinth around the framing at floor level. This skirting/plinth will in a lot of cases interfere with position of bottom hinge so in this instance a door frame would be used.
Clearances – At this stage do not worry about clearances on your gates in width. Clearances will vary depending on how you intend to hang the gates and once an order is received we will contact you to discuss this.
Timbers
We use 5 timbers –
Unsorted Scandinavian Redwood (Softwood) – Manufactured from Unsorted Grade Scandinavian Redwood. This is a better grade of softwood than either 5ths or 6ths and is visually sorted for both smaller and fewer knots which in turn make for stronger timber. All our Scandinavian Redwood products are supplied preservative treated.
Density 510 kg/m3
Meranti (Hardwood)
Density 660 – 710 kg/m3
*Density can vary 20% or more*
Idigbo (Hardwood)
560 kg/m3
*Density can vary 20% or more*
A1 Accoya (Modified Softwood) – Very much the best of the best and the most long lasting comercially used timber. Doesn’t absorb water so doesn’t rot and any movement (shrinkage/expansion) is minimal. So good that Accsys technologies guarantee it against rot for 50 years! Whilst it is a costly timber, its enhanced performance and longevity may justify the investment in certain applications.
Density 510 kg/m3
Prime European Oak (Hardwood) – Sourced from the forests of Europe, the Oak we use is ‘Prime’ Oak rather than joinery grade or character Oak. The grade of Prime Oak ensures timber with minimal defects, such as knots, blemishes, or irregularities. Light to medium-brown in color. The natural hues of prime oak contribute to its timeless and classic appearance.
Density 720 kg/m3
*Density can vary 20% or more*
Our Scandinavian Redwood products are supplied preservative treated (straw coloured) ready for decoration.
Clear preservatives can be added to all our other timbers (with exception of the Accoya) and all are then supplied ready for decoration.
If painting then the Scan Redwood, Meranti or Accoya are the best options. All our timbers can be stained, however is planning on staining the Accoya then please do let us know, as a by product of the modification process the Accoya can have visible black staining/marks which we have to remove, this can result in the gates finishing at 65mm thick rather than our usual 70mm thick.
